Space weather: the solar perspective

چکیده

The Sun, as an active star, is the driver of energetic phenomena that structure interplanetary space and affect planetary atmospheres. effects Space Weather on Earth solar system increasing importance human spaceflight preparing for lunar Mars missions. This review focusing perspective relevant phenomena, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), flares, particles (SEPs), wind stream interaction regions (SIR). With advent STEREO mission (launched in 2006), literally, new perspectives were provided enabled first time to study structures evolution activity three dimensions. New imaging capabilities, covering entire Sun-Earth distance range, allowed seamlessly connect CMEs their counterparts measured in-situ (so called ICMEs). vastly increased our knowledge understanding dynamics due fostered development forecasting models. Moreover, we are facing challenging times gathering data from two extraordinary missions, NASA's Parker Solar Probe 2018) ESA's Orbiter 2020), will near future provide more detailed insight into image view points never approached before. current builds upon Living Reviews paper by Schwenn 2006, updating CME-flare-SEP perspective, observed multiple viewpoints concomitant surface signatures.

Solar Radio Bursts and Space Weather

Space Weather is the study of the conditions in the solar wind that can affect life on the surface of the Earth, particularly the increasingly technologically sophisticated devices that are part of modern life. Solar radio observations are relevant to such phenomena because they generally originate as events in the solar atmosphere, including flares, coronal mass ejections and shocks, that prod...

Fair space weather for solar cycle 24

[1] We discuss the polar field precursor method of solar activity forecasting, first developed 3 decades ago. Using this method the peak amplitude of the next solar cycle (24) is estimated at 124 ± 30 in terms of smoothed F10.7 Radio Flux and 80 ± 30 in terms of smoothed international or Zurich Sunspot number (Ri or Rz). This may be regarded as a ‘‘fair space weather’’ long term forecast. To su...

LOFAR: The potential for solar and space weather studies

The Low Frequency array (LOFAR) will be a next generation digital aperture synthesis radio telescope covering the frequency range from 10 to 240MHz. The instrument will feature full polarisation and multi-beaming capability, and is currently in its design phase. This work highlights the solar, heliospheric and space weather applications where LOFAR, with its unique and unprecedented capabilitie...

The Space Weather and Ultraviolet Solar Variability (SWUSV) Microsatellite Mission

We present the ambitions of the SWUSV (Space Weather and Ultraviolet Solar Variability) Microsatellite Mission that encompasses three major scientific objectives: (1) Space Weather including the prediction and detection of major eruptions and coronal mass ejections (Lyman-Alpha and Herzberg continuum imaging); (2) solar forcing on the climate through radiation and their interactions with the lo...

Improvement of Solar Magnetic Field Data for Space Weather Applications

We have three primary scientific objectives for this project: (1) to continue to improve the accuracy and utility of archival and current solar magnetic field data that are used to help understand and predict space weather; (2) to develop ways of utilizing the significantly improved data to be provided by the SOLIS instruments starting in 2002; and (3) To investigate the predictive potential of...
